Frog Temple

Animals find a very special place in Hindu mythology and this temple in UP’s Lakhimpur Kheri district has made a deity out of a toad and is thronged by devotees on Diwali among other occasions. It is believed that this amphibian changed the fate of a Rajput noble named Bakhat Singh. Once a King named Bakhat Singh was blessed by a frog. Thereafter, his life prospered and even his further generations had a good life. Hence, a temple was built in the honor of that divine frog.

According to Tantra (Tantric Custom), the frog is a symbol of prosperity, luck, and fertility. Hence, there is a strong belief among the followers. This unique Frog Temple holds 200-years old history and is situated in the town of Oel.

Earlier, this region was part of the Oel Kingdom and the temple was also built by the rulers of Oel. Interestingly, here the presiding God is Shiva and not the frog. The structure of the temple that makes us curious. The Shivling installed in the temple was brought from the Banasur Prati Narmdeshwar Narmada Kund. The architecture of this temple is based on Tantra Vidya.

It is just around 120 km from Lucknow in a small town of Oel near Lakhimpur. It is one of unique tremendously designed Lord Shiva temple which is built on the back of a very large frog and this frog is on the back of a large crocodile. Entire temple is based on Mandook Tantra architected by Kapil Tantrik from Meghalaya. It is told by localities that Raja Baksh Singh was King of this Kingdom and entire population was suffering for rain. He was a great disciple of Lord Shiva. He got the Shiv linga while he was in deep meditation near Narmada River. A large Shiv Linga originally worshiped by Badasur came to him while taking bath in Narmada. He established the ling with the help of Tantrik rituals. Now the entire area is full of prosperity by sugarcane and rice cultivation. In every shiv temple you will find a sitting Nandi but here Nandi is in standing mode. Entire temple changes it’s colour automatically. Inside garbhagrih, you will find a very large shiv ling, only 2 doors, entire inner n outer walls beautifully painted with scriptures. Only localities use to come to pray as it is not known to rest of the world. Temple need immediate renovation and repairing as it is very very old in construction. No crowd, No shops,No queue. Only you and Shiva with a pujari.A deep silence.
